Our History and Legacy
About 125,000 people call our 500+ Vineyard churches home throughout the United States. We have a unique call to Kingdom theology, ministry of the Holy Spirit, and justice. God is doing great things in our midst! Below is a little of the history of this global movement started by people hungry to encounter and follow the living God.
We are the Vineyard.
Vineyard Beginnings
In August 1976 Bob and Penny Fulton with a few other leaders of the Yorba Linda friends Church decided to start a small group where they could encourage and minister to one another. These people were desperate, burned out, and hungry for more of Jesus. God had incredible mercy on this gathering and poured out His presence. John Wimber soon visited, and the Holy Spirit grabbed his heart. John was soon filled with the Spirit of God, and vision to plant a church that healed the sick and fed the poor. His vision grew from there. Soon a church was birthed and began meeting at a small building on the main street of Yorba Linda on Mother Day, 1977. These humble beginnings grew into the Vineyard Anaheim church and soon was a movement that profoundly influenced the global church across denominational lines. We now have over 2400 Vineyard Churches worldwide. The Vineyard has impacted the lives of thousands across the globe, and used by God to renew the spiritual life in the 20th and 21st century church.
By 1977 more than 125 people were attending the Fulton home group and eventually the Friends church asked the group to plant a church of their own, and they would bless them. The new church and the Quaker church both blessed and prayed for each other, and the Vineyard was born. As John Wimber led this new church, He became a gifted evangelist, leading hundreds to Christ, often overseeing Bible studies at the same time. John taught and demonstrated that signs and wonders were for today. He was convinced that God wanted to bring healing and expressions of his love and power through his church. Lonnie Frisbee joined the church during these beginnings. Lonnie added to the ministry while depositing a deeper sense of power evangelism. The Anaheim Vineyard grew rapidly, and eventually became the permanent mother ship while planting and sending out churches nationally and internationally.
A Global Movement is Born
In the early 80s, John Wimber took the leadership of the Vineyard churches, and proceeded to plant hundreds of churches in the coming decades, first in the US, and then globally. John Wimber traveled the world, seeking to serve the Church by bringing renewal to many denominations and movements. Over time, the Vineyard Movement grew into a network of over 2400+ churches worldwide in ninety-five countries around the world. The movement also impacted the global Church across denominational lines in profound ways. The Vineyard seeks to blend the best of the Evangelical traditions with their focus on Christ-like character and regard for the Scriptures, with the best of the Pentecostal and Charismatic traditions of welcoming the empowering of the Holy Spirit for life, ministry, and acts of service.
